Hi,
Most of you already know that our Havanese puppy, Tigger, had to go through 2 surgeries on his left hind leg as a result of a rare birth defect. Even after the second surgery, Tigger was refusing to put his foot on the ground, so he was hopping around on one hind leg. Our Vet referred us to a lady who helps dogs by using water therapy. It is a big tank that she fills with warm water up to the dog's shoulders. There is a belt on the floor that rotates like a tread mill. She does half hour sessions, with walking time followed by a rest time & etc. There is also another lady who does half hour physical therapy on the dogs, using large balls, and stretching and masaging the wounded area. She also uses steps, ramps, cones & etc.
Lane & I were both very skeptical, but we wanted to give it a try because nothing else we tried helped at all. From the very first session, Tigger left Carmen & Jeannie with his left hind foot on the ground, rather than a dangling leg and foot that was useless! Each time we took Tigger, there was a noticeable improvement.
People are finding out just how important water & physical therapy can be to the healing process of our best friends! A local channel, Fox News, came and interviewed Carmen and videoed a couple dogs in the water tank. We were excited this morning to watch Tigger on TV!
However, much more important than that is the fact that now many more people will realize there is specialized therapy for dogs who are injured, have surgery, are over weight, or are in pain. Tigger's rehabilitation has been simply remarkable!! They also have a Vet who uses accupuncture and herbal remedies.
If you know of anybody whose dog could benefit, please give them this info.
